Study Trip to Zanzibar
Every year, students from the Inholland University of Applied Sciences' teacher training program (PABO) go on a study trip to Zanzibar. The students teach English to the pupils and teaching teaching skills to the teachers, spread across three primary schools.
They also make time for cultural exploration and visiting Zanzibar's beautiful spots.
It's the combination of heavenly beauty and unprecedented poverty that defines Zanzibar. The students experience both sides.
Student Esmee's experience:
"Besides the wonderful children, the unique experience, and the great time, I also learned so much. How the school system works, how do you teach without a digital board or materials? I also learned how people live here; in the Netherlands, we're so used to materials and time. The people of Zanzibar are hospitable, open, and teach you to live in the moment." This trip has only given me more knowledge about teaching, the world, people, and myself to take back to the Netherlands.
Student Robin's experience:
"It was an incredibly valuable trip, as you connect with each other in a completely different way. You learn from each other's cultures and share bits of life with each other. I learned to be much more grateful for what I have, and I share how we teach in English with them.
Because you spend so much time with the people there, a real bond is formed, and it's wonderful to stay in touch. I've also noticed that I've truly grown mentally during the study trip."
